Hi Miki,

Personally, I think human beings posess a finely-tuned BS detector. If a company lacks commitment and caring, then employees will not care either. They will treat work as an impersonal monetary transaction. In other words, what goes around comes around. Most companies, sadly, earn failing grades in employee motivation 101, which costs them, and the economy, dearly.

I suggest a solution to this sad state of affairs in "Primal Management."; a solution where everybody wins!

Best,

Hi Paul and Phil,

My post today (http://mappingcompanysuccess.com/2010/01/when-realities-collide/) focuses on the disconnect between efforts to engage employees and the move to a just-in-time workforce.

I don't have answers, but would love to hear your thoughts on the four questions I ask, the final one being, "In short, how do you get people to care when they know without a doubt that the company doesn't care about them?"

With thw WSJ reporting that from research, past resession recoveries generally loose 34% of their employees. MSMBC reported that 49% of employees are unhappy with their current employer - a record. Companies have cut people down to the very core staff. Question is what, if anything are employers going to do? What if your company looses 24% or more of your staff? What retention plans are in place?

When people vote with their feet (leaving) then it is too late! When was the last time you ,as a leader, walked and talked to your employes? And I am not talking about just the superficial stuff! When was it that you called your employees by name? Do you know their kids names? How much do they know about you? When was the last time you sent a HAND-WRITTEN "thank you" letter for something an employee did right or outstanding? An e-mail is too informal, easy, and cold to say "thank you." ...

How open are you with the employees? Or is your door "closed" even though you have an "open-door" policy - making employees come to YOU? Try LBWA - Leadership By Walking Around! TRY to catch someone doing something right and praise them - then and there - and not weeks or months later during their annual review because it is too late then.

Leadership is not just at the top but from the top down though the ranks and back up.
